Hearings To Start on Banking Commissioner’s Job

After months of talking about it, the Executive Council and Gov. John Lynch will begin hearings on Nov. 29 to decide the fate of Banking Commissioner Peter Hidlreth. The five-member council and Lynch met in a special Columbus Day session Monday (Oct. 11). They considered whether or not to hold hearings, which could result in firing Hildreth. He’s accused of not providing adequate oversight to safeguard the public from Financial Resource Mortgage, despite numerous consumer complaints.

New Rules for Stream Crossings

All five of Governor John Lynch’s vetoes were sustained yesterday in the N.H. Legislature, although pushing through the bill to repeal certain gun laws (House Bill 1161) was a narrow miss.

Meanwhile (and hardly a dry topic), the Department of Environmental Services is taking its show on the road to explain new rules for road-stream crossings at the estimated 17,000 such locations around the state.

Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-Exeter) underscored the urgency of finalizing their recommendations in time for new laws to be considered during the next legislative session, which starts in January.

A Rocky Start Expected

Meeting for only the second time since it took summer recess in June, House Speaker Terie Norelli (D-Portsmouth) had to remind the 400-member chamber to behave on several occasions when collective boos, cheers and jeers followed various speeches and votes.

This may help explain why lots of activity resulted in definitive votes on only 11 pieces of legislation, by her count. The remainder will be taken up in subsequent weeks.
